Vodun’s Visuals (Working Title)
Since September 2021 Niklas Wolf is a research associate at the University Zurich in the SNF Project Konflikt und Kooperation. Episteme und Methoden zwischen Kunstgeschichte, Kunst und Ethnologie am Beispiel performativer Bildpraktiken der Vodun (Conflict and Cooperation. Episteme and methods between art history, art and ethnology in the performative pictorial practices of Vodun). From 2018 – 2021 he was a research associate at the Institute for Art History at Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich (professorship for values of cultural heritage and provenance research). Since 2021 he is a co-editor of colophon. Magazin für Kunst und Wissenschaft (colophon. Magazine for Art and Science, Munich: Hammann von Mier Verlag).
In 2020 he co-organized and co-curated the conference and exhibition Photobook Africa. Tracing Stories and Imagery (Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, Munich). From 2019 – 2021 he was a research associate with the Exploring Visual Cultures project (Academy of Fine Arts, Munich / University of Education, Winneba / University of South Africa, Pretoria). In 2019 he participated in the VW Summer School Anthropology and Contemporary Visual Arts from the Black Atlantic: between the Art Museum and the Global North (Dakar). In 2017 Niklas Wolf graduated from university with the masters thesis The Invention of Africa. Afrikanische Objekte im photographischen Blick der Moderne (The Invention of Africa. African objects in the photographic gaze of modernity). He publishes and teaches on topics like African Art History (focussing on tradition based art), Material Culture, Interculturality and Aesthetics, Museology and Display.
